Just an update that may be useful to others..

It looks like it was just a case of adjusting the gas valve.. A five minute job lol.

What was adjusted on the gas valve? What have you played with and what effects has this had on the safe combustion performance of your appliance. Without the adequate tools and training you are playing a very dangerous game and putting not only yours but your families and neighbours lives at risk. You have no idea of how safe your boiler is now and as such should be isolated until checked over by an RGI although I'm a great believer in natural selection so feel free to leave it as is and hopefully the breeding process will stop.

But hey well done you for saving a couple of quid.

As for your advice to others I would warn them of the dangers of messing with a gas appliance and although what may seem a simple procedure sometimes there are always additional checks to be done to ensure the continued safety of your appliance. Please don't follow this numptys thread as a success story!

Quit your scaremongering you sanctimonious git. Did I say I did it Columbo? It's all written down in the pdf service manual anyway. Some of you fitters probably knew what it likely was but we all know about Your agendas here.

If this info helps some other poor sod out, tuff tittys.

Wrangler your post is very informative.
My boiler is also acting up in a similar way. I have placed a hot water bottle even around the gas valve in addition to fan heater but cannot get the boiler to work. My boiler is same as yours, is white in colour.

Can you suggest what you adjust on the gas valve to make it work

I also have checked the PCB. Got a relay from maplin, but the relay does not fit as it is too big. What if I solder bits of wire on maplin relay, will I be able to solder the wires to the PCB. Do you have a wiring diagram- last time I did anything electrical, I miswired the plug on the kettle. The cat likes to sit next to the kettle, it got a fright and now it only has eight lives left

I look forward to hearing from you as my wife is threatening to call someone to fix the boiler.

PS. Fan heater is a good idea- I have killed her hair dryer which I was using previously to dry the quilt that surrounds the boiler to keep water hot when boiler was working(y)

But replacing parts without a proper diagnosis is likely to end up more expensive in the long run.

Without being at the boiler I have no idea what is wrong but it could well be a small adjustment which does not need any parts.

Tony

I said that FOUR months ago!

Haha, gave me a good chuckle reading that.

Regarding the gas valve:

Whilst being highly odd and amusing using a fan heater to warm the boiler it actually made a big difference. On cold days, noticed boiler sulked and refused to fire-up more than warmer days which led me to believe something might be sticking through contraction, so by pre-warming boiler it became almost normal. Then it eventually dawned on me and with the cryptic help and advice from the magnificent Tony that something probably needed adjustment.

I always suspected the gas valve might be the culprit but not being the hasty type to rush out and throw money at it, left it till last. Little did I know that the valve had a adjustable nylon screw that presumably altered the flow/pressure and would end my boilers woes.

To everybody. Please don't hate me I dindonuffin I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me bla bla bla, tee hee :p
