With regards to council advice, herts are happy to put their comments in writing in fact I send the emails to their direct personal work address. Harrow don't do this however and don't even offer a drop in session.

I'm sure you're right. Each council will have their own specific policy on how they repspond to enquiries. The OP will find out soon enough from his own LA

My understanding is that "insertion" is referring to a new door and window and not replacement



I have just received a reply from the Planning Permission:

"Dear Jay,


So long as the new door is of the same or similar appearance to the existing house planning permission would not be required."

My borough is Barking and Dagenham just in case anyone wondering.

Perhaps it is the risk manager in me that is being cautious. But if it was me I would specifically put it in writing that you plan to move the door from side to front as that might not be clear to them than simply replacing it. Only saying.....

I completely understand.

I think having the email to fall back on would be enough.

The planning policy that applies to doorways applies to the doorway only, and what someone chooses to add on the other side of the doorway, or what happens when someone walks through the doorway is another matter.
