Changing locks

Hi All

Just trying to change the lock on our new house. However, the Yale lock I have is slightly smaller than the lock it replacing. Should I bulk out the old hole with some wood glue to fill the spaces? Or is there another solution?

Rim nightlatches (often called Yales) are not much good, but will usually prevent the front door blowing open in the wind. They are mostly 60mm backset (door edge to keyhole centre) with 40mm used on narrow stiles.

There are some 50mm cases, sometimes seen on council flats, but not common. If you try to make the hole wider for a lock that doesn't fit, it will be weak and unsatisfactory. Post a pic of your old and new latches, and measure the backset carefully and accurately.

Have you got an electric drill and round holesaws?

A BS mortice deadlock is much better.
