Intergas hot water issue.

Not sure what the installation instructions said exactly, but a Salamander was fitted by the GSR on the incoming cold.

It was only when phoning Intergas for guidance that it was pointed out that the high water ph levels in the Reading area demand protection by a CombiMate type device.

Dan, too late now, but did my son's installer "speed-read" a vital stipulation?

Water treatment is in the manual, but common sense would dictate that it is needed in Reading with that kind of boiler.

The instructions state that a water conditioning device must be used in a hard water area, sadly most of the models on the market are snake oil and their claims haven't been proven.

Some of the silicone phosphate units are good and the Hydroflo 38's seem to be ok but pricy.

As Dan says the flow temperature of the central heating needs to be turned down from the factory setting so the water that's sitting in the hot coil doesn't get hot enough to form scale.

All of this has made me realise that my boiler needs proper protection - it merely has one of those ceramic magnet things. I'd love to fit a CombiMate myself, but it really is quite a big unit and I'm pushed to actually fit it somewhere.

The Aquadial type units seem more compact, but they tend to get bad press. Is there anything out there that has the CombiMate reputation, but not the sheer bulk?

We recently serviced an 8 year old Intergas that is in Saint Albans. It had an Aquadial unit on it and no immediate signs of limescale (in so far as it heated the water correctly.

I am still surprised you son didn't have significant problems with the temperature cycling on hot water mode before now though.


Remember though, anything other than salt softener is still a compromise. A good softener will pay for itself - talk to Harveys softeners - they are not far from you.

Odd no one here has actually mentioned the CH temperature to set the boiler for to lessen lime scale deposition.

The answer is as low as possible! But 60 C would be pretty good!

In fairness to Dan, who knows most things Intergas, I have questioned my son re shower temps and he has admitted that the shower temp did used to vary.
