Literally spent the best part of 2 hours trying to unscrew that tiny washer. It's a corner basin, all I can get under there is a pair of pliars and I've strained my hand trying to pinch it and then turn it. Tried from the top, balded the thing right up.. any special tools? The only option I see left is removing the basin itself to get at it which is ridiculous

No special tools I'm afraid. Hands of a six year old and the flexibility of a Chinese gymnast is needed!

Why are you trying to remove it?

If it's to replace the plug and chain is it not possible to leave the stud in position and split the chain where it joins? They normally have a triangular link that is split and allows removal. You could then replace the chain and plug.

Thought as much. Shame I balded the silver bit trying to unscrew. Bizzare how something so tiny can put up so much resistance. Reason I'm going to the trouble is the old lady wanted the waste replaced because it had rusted up over the years. The new waste came with a new chain, so shame to not use it.
