Hi I'm having a nightmare with getting paint to stick and wondered if anyone can help. We've recently had the ceilings re-plastered and have used fortress contract Matt for new plaster to paint it. The plaster was definitely dry and we applied a mist coat, which in patches didn't seem to want to stick but eventually did. When this had dried, upon trying to apply further coats the paint has stripped off the first coat. This has happened in patches. The back of the paint that comes off is the same colour as the plaster and is evenly coloured but it's not thick pieces of plaster coming off.

The plaster wasn't entirely perfect it did have some blemishes, very fine cracks and rough patches that have required filling, but these areas are not the problem areas. Any ideas what could be causing this and how to fix? Ideally I don't want to scrape all of the paint off and start again :(
Any help much appreciated!!

Is it flaking off dry, or is it slopping off wet?

I can't imagine you not already knowing what the problem might be.

The first coat was dry but it's all coming off on the roller when the next coat is still wet.

If you were to rub your finger over the first coat . . . is it dry or wet where it's coming off ?

It's dry but then comes off with the second coat when that's wet. It's in random patches it's not the whole ceiling

STOP !

There is a distinct possibility that the whole ceiling may come down.

You must immediately down tools & seek the services of an architectural structural engineer. The whole lot might need to be piled after the ring main has been purged.

How might that happen then???

How might that happen then???

Because paint is either wet or dry. Same as plaster.

If/when it exists in a third state . . . then everyone should seek the services of an architecturalologist.

The OP stated the first coat was dry. Paint would surely be wet coming out of the bucket?

What's it got to do with the ring main?

??? I think there are probably other forums you can discuss Douglas Adams lol. Thanks for your thoughts but robbo2777 is right that it was dry and the second coat was wet

So what's making it come off then?

Answer the questions & we may be able to help.

If you don't/won't/can't then we'll have our little bit of fun before you do.

Scrap that. Please tell anyone whose ever held a paint brush & been paid for it . . . "which in patches didn't seem to want to stick but eventually did".

What exactly does this mean? Did the paint not stick but you managed to stick it somehow? How did you manage that then?

It didn't go on as easily as the rest of the paint did and had to be reapplied. To be honest I came on here for some advice as this is something I haven't done before but didn't expect to be greeted by someone acting like an arse. If you didn't understand what I meant it would've been easier to say. You've chosen to waste your own time but I'd appreciate you not wasting any more of mine so you may like to divert your attention to some other threads and clown around there

Goodbye then.
