Noticed a steady drip this afternoon coming from the boiler. Immediately switched it off fearing the worst. Took the cover off and it's the pressure gauge that is leaking. At the rear of the pressure gauge there is a cable and a spring, the spring sits inside the rear of the pressure gauge and it seems that the spring is corroded and so there is water coming out of the gauge itself. It drips at around a rate of 1 drip per second and water is now actually filling up inside the gauge itself.

Firstly, how do I turn off the water supply to the boiler and secondly, if I buy a replacement pressure gauge, will it be easy to reinstall? The opposite end of the pressure gauge is connected to a pump of some sort by a brass nut,

Thanks in advance.

turn off flow and return heating isolation valves under boiler, release pressure from heating system on drain point

Drained the radiator in the bathroom (where the boiler is situated) until the pressure gauge dropped to zero and that did the trick. The dripping has stopped and the pressure gauge dial is clearing up.

What is the step by step procedure for taking off the old pressure gauge and installing a new one? I'm a competent person but I would like to know the exact, safe steps to complete this task. I can buy a replacement pressure gauge for £13 and do it myself as opposed to getting charged the earth from my local plumber/boiler man.

well if you are a compotent person why would you be asking on here ? and by the way you will probably need a set of isolating valves also now that you have turned them off

I haven't touched the isolating valves...and you may want to check the dictionary definition of competent to understand its meaning and correct spelling, not compotent, as you have incorrectly stated. Quite incompotent of you. Anyway, thanks for your input.

I am a local plumber/boiler man (as are many here) and if you think we charge the earth to do our job... Why 'on earth' do you think we'd tell you how to do it, for free???

Must be grumpy Saturday on here. I hope you have a better Sunday. Thanks for your input, also.

why do people nowadays automatically think they can repair boilers just because its cheaper, its getting way out of hand , like the op you know what is wrong so how much do you think its going to actually cost ??? come on !!!! get the job done right in the first place , its not going to cost the earth

OK, fair point. Tell me, you know the diagnosis and the problem, how much would you charge to supply the part and do the repair and I'll tell you if I think that it is overpriced or not.

I'm doing some work for a friend at his house and am working for 'mates rates'. One job I'm doing he was quoted £900 for, which is laughable. I have almost finished the job and it is of a high quality, as good as or even better than the person who quoted him £900. When I have finished said job, it will have cost him around £300, a third of the price he was quoted. Even if it wasn't at 'mates rates', there is no way I would have had the audacity to ask for anywhere near £900 to do that job as it would have been offensive and downright cheeky to ask for any more than £400-500. See my point?

what job are u doing for your mate ? could you routinely do your job at mates rates and make a living running a business ? how do you know you have done a better job than the £900 guy ?you could be very bias about your ability . i could go on . if your that paranoid about the price you will have to pay ( which won't cost as much as you think , as long as your not a tight tw-t, considering safety ) get a price before he starts . but don't f-ck him around for such a small job he has got overheads for which i don't think your considering when doing your mates rates . you never know you might get an rgi you trust and have years to come , we are not all conning fookers . we hear that comment almost daily and you wonder why these good people here are not helping you .

I'm weeding and putting weedkiller down on my mates drive, pressure washing, cleaning, repairing and refinishing. It's a big drive. It's taken me 4 days and maybe another day to finish it off. I know I've done a good job as that's what I used to do. It's not a difficult job to do well if you know what you're doing and take your time. It's not rocket science and I know my work is of a high standard as it's better than most jobs I see that charge ridiculous amounts.

The guy next door has just had a new house built. The brickwork is crap, the driveway is crap and the house went on the market for £220,000. The drive alone cost £4000 and it's a bodge job, I could have and have done better. I know what is good quality or not, regardless of whether or not I know how to do something.

What has being a small job got to do with anything? If something needs fixing and it costs £20 or £200, it still needs fixing and is money in a guys hand. I'm fed up of GSI's complaining about having no big jobs on and only doing minor repairs or safety checks/services. Money is money, after all.

What price would you say it's going to cost me then, seeing as you have such an opinion?

time is money but how much ? ( remember business to run ). why do i get a funny gut feeling you don't do driveways as a business . nice try on trying to get price out of me , why do you think we only do minor works ?? look are you competent enough to pick that dam phone up

you would not want to know what my opinion is ? , you come to ask advice of professionals then take the p-ss at least i can choose my customers . OH PICK UP THE PHONE , be a good man don't winge about paying the man but i think your doing the job anyway

Lol! This is going nowhere. You're reading my posts out of context. I WILL call my local guy to get the problem fixed, I just don't want to get ripped off like I have done before on more than one occasion. I was asking a rough price to see what was the average charge for fixing the problem I have, seeing as you know that field.

If you ever want your drive doing, it will be £900+VAT, thankyouverymuch ;)

Must be a full moon. Posts like this one are coming thick and fast

Moon perhaps defecting suggestive text? Know Ian can write AND can repair boilers too. Meanwhile strong lunar Gravity around Stone has effected what is known as humbleness and gratitude
