The seal is an "O" ring sealing against a "socket" in the ali heat exchanger.
But if left to leak then the system water and atmosphere in a wet environment will cause the ali to corrode and create pitting which prevents effective sealing again.
When these first came out they only cost £541 and seemed a pretty good value boiler.
I fitted seven of them. The first had a manufacturer's adjustment fault. The mixture went out of adjustment when the boiler modulated down to minimum. This was not identified then because the auto testing only checked that the boiler modulated and not that it would run at minimum power. They decided to send out someone from the design team who I had previously met. Together with something like a regional technical manager. It only needed a minor adjustment which could have done but they wanted to see it themselves.
Of the seven I installed all had PCB failures within the first two years. One twice! One was a system boiler with only a one year warranty ( which I had not noticed ) whereas the combi boilers had two. But the Technical Director at the time was very helpful and still covered it for me after 14 months.
A BG covered Isar was refused repair by BG for exactly the same fault as yours. I went to it ( referred by Dan ) but even as I was there the husband was at B&Q, buying a Ravenheat boiler I expect, which he was planning to fit himself. So it was a wasted journey on my part.
