What do you think of this brick work?

Had a porch being built.

What do you think of the quality of this brick work done by my Bricky?

You will notice it matches back wall better then it does to wall it's toothed into(as this was used to have ivy which means it weathered less) but I'm sure I can arrange this to be stained.

From the pic, personally I would say the brickwork looks neat and tidy.
One (small) criticism I would make is the connection to the front wall, where the new brickwork is flush with the existing.
It generally looks better if it is set back by half a brick, so that you get a neater line.
Makes the porch a little smaller, though,

Hard to see properly from a photo. How big is the joint at DPC?

Echo Tony's thoughts, set the wall back say 25mm is better when a perfect match can't be found, done it on garage convertion door infill walls quite often. But a fine job for peanuts.

Mind you, as Stuart mentioned, that joint under the doc looks enormous especially on the right hand side.

Insulated porch? Interesting.. That wouldn't normally be required unless you're ditching the existing front door.. which may then make it more of an extension than a porch/require building regs approval..

We asked him about that. He just said that's the way it had to be. What made or more complex is the dpc on the garage side is different to the one on the house

It did require planning permission. But as you mention it didn't need insulation/cavity as porch are not subject inspections. The cavity was just to stop damp(which I was strongly advised) and it doesn't cost much for insulation .

I wonder how we get a completion certificate of this is the case a case of saying its completed and you got it?


I want to self install Windows and doors without fensa. Is this possible and I can still get completion?

In hindsight it would have been better to do a 50mm cavity. 100mm is overkill

Question doesn't really make sense; you're either building a mini extension to the front of your house, removing the existing front door and the new structure is vital to the thermal and moisture envelope of the dwelling(and has to have certified windows), or you aren't.
In the case of the former, you need regs approval. In the case of the latter, you don't..

When you decide what you're building, you'll know whether you can self install your windows or not

Maybe leave it a porch, not contributing to the thermal/moisture envelope but build it right, just in case your front door falls off one day and it takes some time to secure a suitable replacement
