How about florescent or led batton instead?
The type that go under kitchen units typically have a switch on them.
And you can get different lengths (or connect them together) to match you workbench length.
Here is an example of a LED one at screwfix (there are many other lengths and types),

On a serious note, you could add little miniature pullcord switch like they use in mirror lights onto a fluorescent batten rather than fitting an external one if it was a big deal.
Yes I could. Just seems like unecessary to install two things instead of all-in-one! I guess the EU has outlawed those old pull-cord lamps, or something!
