Hi,

I was wondering what is the surest way of protecting the above whilst I paint the door lining and stain the doors? Standard masking tape is what I had in mind but would like to hear about any particular product or technique that is recommended for this.

Frog tape from B&Q. Available in more or less sticky depending on how fragile the surface it is applied to. I'm pleased with the results so far.

Possibly very similar but dearer. It claims not to let paint bleed under the edge which I found to be true. It pulls off easily with no damage to the underlying surface and leaves a very sharp, clean margin.

Surfaces involved were old paint, wallpaper, varnish. The weaker version ( yellow), can apparently be safely applied to fresh paint though I have not used it for this yet.

I like anything which makes the job easier and gives a better result. The costs can be justified when you factor in the cost of employing someone to do it for you.

I can paint a straight line without tape but the results with Frog tape are sharper and quicker, I am a convert.

Remove door handles, latches and strike plates. It's far easier in the long run, guarantees no paint seepage, and provides a professional result. Painting around handles leaves a ridge in the paint which can be noticeable further down the line, and can be tricky to try and hide, if you ever want to change to a different type of handle. Use tape only on the hinges, if you really don't have a steady enough hand to cut in without getting paint on them.

That's not strictly true, is fine once paint is fully cured.
good tape though and does leave a good clean edge.
As said though remove the furniture and mask the hinges if your concerned
