The words "punishment beating" coupled with "WWII" usually conjure up an image with most intelligent people and it isn't that of a friendly father type figure. I think you have to give the press some sway with this one, they do have a point.

Boris has a bad habit of shooting from the mouth, but in essence, he called the situation as it is. The Maltese prime minister said that we'd have a second class deal if we were leaving the EU, and Junkers and Hollande have both said that they would give us a bad deal to deter others from leaving, so Boris was pretty much right; they're going to beat us up to deter others from leaving. But he should have followed Basil Fawltys advice, and not mentioned the war.

Remember that if you announce you're going to resign from the golf club, and stop paying your subs, you can't expect to have the same playing rights as a member; and obviously you won't be getting better privileges than the paid-up members get. You probably won't be invited to the annual dinner, either.

Maybe Boris thinks he can cobble up a new trade deal with Somalia and North Korea to compensate for the loss of Single Market Membership with France and Germany.

If you want to play on the club turf, as a non-member, you pay whatever Green Fees they set, or f uck off.

The daft thing about this whole debate, is that the EU feels they have to punish us to deter others from leaving, but in a fair world, they would just say fine, we both need to trade with each other, so lets just sit down and work out a mutual arrangement that's good for both of us. We trade with other countries, and they don't dictate to us, so why should the EU feel that they can do that to us.

In leaving, we don't want to go to the dinners, nor do we want to be ruled by them on virtually every aspect of our life, and if this was a good club to be in, they would have listened to our concerns over immigration levels, and said okay, we'll see what we can do to help, and we'd have stayed in. Instead, they acted like the camp commandant that Boris mentioned. We are better off out of it, and after a bit of a rough ride, will be fine, even Scotland will be okay; it's Ireland with a porous border that's in question.

They were mostly saddened and regretful and anxious to get on with arranging an amicable divorce. They've said multiple times that to be in the Single Market you have to accept the Four Freedoms, and Theresa didn't believe it. The UK govt has made some ineffectual attempts to start negotiations with individual countries prior to activating Article 50, and has been repeatedly told they can't.

They know that arranging multilateral treaties is hard, and takes years. They're appalled that UK hasn't been able to say what it wants.

After six months all they've got is belligerent speeches from Theresa and insults from Boris. They're losing patience. Still no article 50 notice. They won't start work until (unless?) they get it. It's down to Theresa.

They are (of course) not planning to give an ex-member better terms than members get. Why on earth would any sane person expect it?
