Random orbit or a palm sander.
A belt sander is far to aggressive and is a quick way to totally destroy the wall.

I still there any way other way round it?, such a short out a primer, because I been sanding and scrapping all day and it's still very patchy, Probably only got rid of 40%. . I have a sander with 60 grit.
disc sander with flexible rubber back, it is a lot quicker, but very dusty, wear mask, and use 60 grit discs.
What about a heat gun. I been googled
It may work on certain types of paints, like silk vinyl on emulsions it may not do anything apart from heat the wall. Worth a try if you have a heat gun.
You're not French polishing. You just need to provide a key for the tile adhesive. 30 minutes at the most, and that includes two tea breaks.

) You asked what is the best way to sand down old paint from walls, had you asked what is the best chemical stripper for removing paint, I would have said nitromors, so never mind at least you got it off, and I hope your tiler will be able to stick tiles on it perfectly. I just had my bathroom tiles fixed by some so called professional builder, I only get Romanians or Polish Builders in east London, whatever happened to proper English builders I have no idea, seems like they have all migrated to Australia, but ok the quote was cheap, sticking about 300 tiles for £250.00, I thought the price was more than reasonable, but the job started out OK, tiles were more or less perfect, give and take one or two tiles that had one or two corners sticking proud slightly, they also used a self leveling laser two axis laser marker, these guys can impress you they are highly professional with their £600.00 laser marker! that reminds me of a gas safe Engineer who claimed to be highly qualified and showed me off his Gas Analyser he paid £800.00 for it, yet he has to scratch his head more often for answers than a bloke with head full of fleas.
So after they stuck all the tiles more or less perfectly plumbed and flat, but then came the shock, when they did the grouting, it was the most horrible finishing and I was so appalled that I spent all day today ripping off the newly put grout that had set so hard, my Stanley knife blade eroded by 25% removing part grout, I then applied new grout myself to a very high standard close to let us say 90% if not full 100%, and I would give their finish about 50% good, their grout was running thick and think, wide and narrow, it was totally unacceptable to me, so I got one of the guy to start taking it out with me, so I hear him say how he did a lot of tiling work in Italy and no one ever complained about his job in Italy, I then said yes but this is England, we expect very high standard workmanship, no rubbish, even though this bathroom is for tenants, I took all that trouble to redo it right, so today I have rescued half the bath and tomorrow I am hoping to complete it all, I have also spent £100.00 on two stainless steel mirror cabinets looking so nice that i dod not even have this good in my own bathroom.

Presuming its a plaster wall your after removing the paint just sand it and apply a PVA mix solution(50/50 for a strong mix) then let the tiler do his stuff , if he uses a good adhesive Bal or Evo or Mapei job should be a gud in,,,if your tiling over timber or a gloss paint(which isn't recommended) watch out that the paint dosnt contain lead,, as early paints did,, ,,just wear a suitable mask

Do NOT put PVA on a wall and then tile over it.
With PVA underneath, it won't matter what the adhesive is.
