What ho one and all,

In have a submersible pump for my rainwater that has gone on the blink.

Transpires that the capacitor has gone AWOL and the placement part is b****y expensive. Have found a similar on FleaBay with the same numbers, etc. Presumably it is OK to use a similar one rather than an original?

Thanks

Rex

The capacitor should be replaceable with any other like for like capacitor without needing to get a specific part from the manufacturer. As long as you are sure about the voltage, capacitance etc... of the capacitor your replacing. Also be weary of some eBay listings (unless you have a capacitor tester and can validate the accuracy of the item), if not I suggest buying a replacement cap from a reputable source.

Thanks for the advice. I am aware of the 'hype' on fleaBay listings.

My main issue with the replacement from the pump company is not so much the price, but the excessive courier charge for delivery. They don't offer a post office service.

Not sure if anyone can offer a Post Office service? The capacitor has electrolyte in it, it is absorbed in a mat but so is the electrolyte in VRLA batteries, I think it will need to go vir some other service.

Have you tried RS or CPC, might be more expensive than some but offer free or reasonable delivery

People send capacitors in the post all the time. And products containing them.

Is your submersble pump actually maintainable? I mean, what with it being mains powered and dunked under water you have to be very sure that once you've replaced the capacitor that the joints in the housing really are water-tight. Often seals aren't designed to be re-made.

I remember the Flygte Bibo1 pump, capacitors were in a box not in the pump, I remember the charge hand electrician had gone to look at one, he undid the cable at pump to move it, he sent me to reconnect, question was how was it wired, he said just test direction if wrong swap two wires, does not work that way with single phase. The pump had two compartments each with bungs screwed into place, we had a converted bung with a car tyre valve on it. We would inflate to about 15 psi and leave a few hours then re-test if it hold pressure OK. Then fill seal void with special oil, some had bags inside and you filled, some you had to carefully measure amount of oil, in service any leak makes oil go white.
