Hey when screwing in the screws to screw the socket cover to the back box they screw in but don't nip up tight. So I wonder if the threads could be knackered? The back box and sockets are 20 years all the screws are new ones needed to be longer as are tiled behind. Any advice?

Might be stripped threads, you can buy rethreaders (3.5mm taps) from any wholesaler or screw fix etc, or possibly they might be a bit short, long screws available from same places

However if the threads are stripped you would need to do something like squash the hole using pliers first.
If all else fails araldite a 3.5mm nut to the back of the lug.

How much are re threaders

How man y are in each pack of those backbox savers? £5 if you buy 1 pack! christ!

Do you just screw the re threading tool in once and the thread should then be OK?

Yes, just make sure it goes through the hole straight and level.
The same tool can be used to clean up existing threads, as even some new boxes have rather manky threads which don't take screws easily.
