people like Bernardgreen and agile are full of it and are just interested in glorifying themselves,

I suspect the gas safe chaps chattering away to each other in the Combustion Chamber are handing out Thanks to each other to make themselves appear to be the most useful people on the forums. High Thanks Counts visible in the Public forums make these GasSafe people appear to be the most helpful people on the site when in reality they are not the most helpful to anyone other than their friends in the Combustion Chamber.

Thanks should be given to those people who provide advice and help to DIYers who ask questions in the Public Forums

If one GasSafe person wants to thank another GasSafe person for advice passed across in the Combustion Chamber then that Thanks should not be added to Thanks Count that the Public can see. Have a separate counter for "Thanked In Combustion Chamber"

There is no whinging involved. Just concern that some people who give no advice to the general public have high thanks counts which make them appear to be good and accurate at giving advice to the DIYers. This can mislead new comers to take their advice rather than opposing advice from others who cannot benefit from thanks handed out in the privacy of the Combustion Chamber,

You have no idea what the thanks and likes are given for in the CC just as I and the others don't know where yours came from. It matters not.

You've been given likes for posts where your advice has been useless but the OP didn't know any better. So what?

So the tendency would be for that not to happen to a significant degree

So your reaction to Bernard's suggestion indicates that he is right, and that you don't want his suggestion to be implemented.

So at the time of this post, the second line in your signature appears to be self-referencing, given that you wrote this:

It matters a great deal. Whether through wilfulness or a handicap, you have tried to ignore the whole point. It doesn't matter what the thanks and likes are given for in the CC - it matters where they are given.

Bernard's thanks are publicly visible. Those in the CC are not.

I am not interested in getting a high thanks count.

you might not be, but obviously somebody else is.

Some of the plumbers even thank each other for writing unhelpful and insulting replies to innocent new members.

They are only publicly visible to those bored enough to go through all the posts he's made....there were people giving random thanks for nonsense posts in the general forum should they be visible?

Contributions count no matter where they're posted.

Thousands of thanks for posting nonsense (or bigotry, lies, criminality etc) do not mean that the person being thanked for them can be trusted to be giving good advice, unless what you're after is nonsense, bigotry, lies, criminality etc.

Thousands of thanks for posting as a SME in forums dealing with a particular subject do mean that the person being thanked for them can be trusted.

My point?

Apologies if it was too hard for you to understand - I do sometimes forget how hard-of-thinking some people can be.

The way it works is this - my post was immediately after yours, therefore it was in reply to yours.

Contributions count no matter where they're posted.

Is it clearer to you now?

Your position: contributions count no matter where they're posted.

My position: don't be ridiculous - of course they don't.

No you're just a very boring person, and as such one doesn't want to spend too much of one's life interpreting your ramblings.

You're entitled to you opinion. I doubt many will care enough to lose sleep over it.

Ah - I owe you another apology.

I forgot that some people here care so little about how good a job they do, and are just so ($&%*#'( lazy that they simply cannot be bothered to spend less than 30 seconds to read a post 66 words long, and think, for some utterly deranged reason, that they are right in that.

This bernardgreen guy takes the cake for such laughable, confused, and self-contradictory posts.

He goes on at detailed length about "thanks" - mentions the word a number of times, & then claims to have no interest in what he's been obsessively whining about.
Oh, I see, you were only waving not drowning?

And while he actually has no interest in the issue he's raised, he requests that the structure of the forum might be changed to accommodate this howling lack of interest?

Given that such logical nonsense comes from one who styles himself: "a problem solver, an alternative thinker and an agony aunt" I'd say that the only bit he's got right is the agony he must feel that someone somewhere might be getting thanked.

Keep googling my confused DIY'er friend, & eventually you might encounter the word maturity.

I do not suppose that it would be particularly difficult to add a 'find' criteria to the search function to find all posts received by a specific poster that have received 'thanks' or 'likes'
Admin? It might resolve many an argument about 'thanks' received etc.

Of course if it transpired that it appeared that the 'thanks' function was being regularly abused, one would then want a 'find' criteria to find all 'thanks' given by a specific poster.
