12V halogen bulbs buzz and flicker with dimmer

I don't suppose the IEC documents quote other peculiarly British ways -

like ring final circuits and restrictive bathroom regulations.

No, they don't.
So when the article claims to be quoting a table from an IEC document, it isn't?
That's correct, it isn't.
The IEC does not define "supply system low voltage" at all, or at least not in Electropedia. There are numerous other errors.

Ignore the previous post - 60449 has been superseded by 61140, which states in its Scope:
NOTE There are some clauses in this standard which refer to low-voltage and high-voltage systems, installations
and equipment. For the purpose of this standard, low-voltage is any rated voltage up to and including 1 000 V a.c.
or 1 500 V d.c. High voltage is any rated voltage exceeding 1 000 V a.c. or 1 500 V d.c.

You say the Wiki article is incorrect - not arguing but -

it states US extra low voltage is 30Vrms/60Vdc so could be whatever countries decide.

I've a copy of the NEC somewhere... AFAIR the US limits for ELV are the same as specified in IEC 61201.
Countries are of course free to differ from the IEC, and for national installation standards, from CENELEC

ZZZ,
don't worry I too am very hopeful that it will work. Although I have just thought there is even the chance that the 240V-12V power supply has failed and only working in a on/off mode.

So I am very conscious that the wonders of internet forums means that I can give the impression of 'positive, defining and accurate advice' about a little white box that I cannot see, to you who I do not want to upset if I am wrong. So crossed fingers and hope it works, which I think it will with the Varilight dimmer.

Hello, thought I'd give a final update! I bought the Varilight and had a different electrician in to install it - a much more thorough and competent one... It turned out that the light fitting itself was faulty. There was a contract being made between one of the cables leading from the transformer to a pendant light. The electrician was pretty stumped to start with because the Varilight dimmer seemed to work, and then after the light was fixed back to the ceiling, it didn't work, and the transformer was making faint clicking noises. He tested every wire inside the fitting with a multi meter and found the fault. Once that was fixed, it turned out that the transformer had somehow become damaged and was not outputting 12V. He went to Screwfix and got a new one - with a driver. So in the end the original Screwfix dimmer works just fine! I sent the Varilight back. It's a superior switch because it has a driver built in, but since I got a new transformer/driver, it wasn't necessary. The website where I got the light and the manufacturer should have told me about the need for a driver with low voltage halogen bulbs. But also there was a fault with the light itself so it was a mess overall, and I'm glad the second electrician figured it out.

Thx for the update... you got me smiling (in a sympathetic way) with the final issue. - sorry my suggestion was wrong. Great to hear you got a good electrification who got it working,

They are NOT low voltage. Mains 240 volt is low voltage. Yours are 12 volts which is extra low voltage.

Thanks again for the time to offer your advice, at least I've learned a bit about dimmer switches!
