Hi all, a few days ago a box/plate thing appeared on a lampost near my house and I was wondering what it is. It's wired into the lampost, and there is a wire from the box to the plate, so I guess it could be an aerial. The lampost is in a cul-de-sac so there's no through traffic. Does anyone here know what it is?

Most probably a traffic monitoring device for surveying traffic flow, how many cars per hour etc. etc. It may also measure speed without identifying the vehicles.

4G mobile network antenna?

Have you looked through planning permission applications for your street? It could be listed on there.

Does the cul de sac have any traffic problem ? Commuters parking there instead of in the station car park. That sort of thing can induce a council to survey the problem.

Whats on the label.
Usually with a phone Arial, they put the planning application on the post prior, to allow people to object.

Maybe the power box for something wifi nearby

Thanks for the suggestions. I think we can rule out a mobile phone aerial, there's an exchange 100 yards away with a large selection of mobile phone antennae and there is good 4G coverage. I did think it could be a wifi hotspot, but I can't see any evidence of it using my phone as a detector. There were no planning notices posted prior to it appearing.

There are also no traffic or parking problems Bernard (nearest station is 7 miles away). Out of interest, how would a device like that monitor traffic?

Rocky, good idea... I shall take my decent camera & lens and see if I can zoom into that label!

Winston, I think we all know what rocky means; is it all right with you if I use the word "phone" to describe a device that utilises wifi?

can you tell how many wires into it, we have a similar thing up the road, but theres a camera above it, maybe not fitted yet, ours monitors illegal right turns, and assume it transmits to somewhere.

Master node for radio controlled street lighting? The cell on the light does look a bit chunky to just be a standard photocell. Our council has migrated over to radio controlled street lighting across the entire county and we have master nodes dotted around the place, they look different to this but I'd guess they come in all shapes and sizes.

Is this a camera?

There's one on top of each street light, so I think it is a photocell. All the streetlights were replaced with led a couple of years ago, this post is the only one with the square thing and it was installed a few days ago.
