Hi.

Just moving into a rented property and the bathroom is a right mess.

It looks like the tiles were originally pink and white patterned and then at some point have been painted over with white paint. however the white paint has come off in a large area. And was never painted behins the cabinet we just removed.

Whats the best option for us to do here?

Strip the tiles? Or just paint over in white tile paint? Or is there another option? (Re-tiling isnt an option as its private rent and not worth it but I cant leave it this bad)

Many thanks! (Expect many threads like this as the whole house is in disrepair!)

Hi nige.

Previous tenants who i just managed to speak to. Said the put tile paint on and it just used to peel off :( so is there anything i can do to avoid that happening? Do i need to get the old paint off first?

Scrape off as much as you can and rough the surface up with wet and dry to give the paint a good key?.

Hard wearing sandpaper basically that you can use wet or dry.

You can get different grades.

The surface of the tile is very smooth (glass like) so hard to get paint to stick without a decent key.

Thanks for helping me. What grade is best? Also if it doesnt scrape off easily what can I use? Also when I paint do I paint all the way across including the grout? Thanks

Prime the raw areas with Zinsser Bullseye 123 then repaint over with whatever you want.

If it seems pretty sound, just sand down and coat with the Zinsser 123. No need to take any paint off.

Zinsser Bullseye 123 is an adhesion primer that will stick to the tiles shiny surface, When dry anything can be painted on top of it.

As Robbie says, use the Zinsser 123, I did tiled communal hallway walls in a multiple occupancy residence, put the 123 on first followed by vinyl matt, lasted years.
