It would also have worked the other way round, so....the 2 browns that are together (that's the live feed/loop ) into C, the other brown (the switched live to the lamp) into L1 should work

The dimmer may also be faulty now.Jacob - assuming that you've screwed onto copper, and not the insulation, then either the dimmer is faulty, or the grow-lamp is faulty, or there's an incompatibility.

Just realised that that is a Varilight V-Pro dimmer designed for LEDs. Looks like it's one of these:

I knew it was an LED dimmer.
But I didn't twig, yesterday, that this almost certainly means it's not an LED light.
