Just had them round for a quote. They worked out that I have a 14.3Kw heat loss so recommend a 15Kw boiler to replace my 26 year old 18Kw one. I’m pretty sure I can get a good gas safe independant round for a lot less than that. Would any of you insist on a scaffold/tower to seal the outside of the flue and if so, how much would you add on to the job for it? Oh, and they want some kind of handrail around the loft hatch before they go up the loft in case they fell down it. Watch where you’re putting your feet I’d say!

If I did have them install it, before they came round I’d replace the spur myself, supply and fit the mag filter, tell them to forget the system 'clean' and Hive control and borrow my mates scaffold tower and have it up and ready for them! That’ll save nearly a grand! Don’t know why but in my mind I had a max price of £2,500 but I think an independant will come in even less than that.

Tell me this: Would you feel it out of order if I were to buy my own boiler and mag filter and just get a price from a gas-safe bloke to fit it all in and register it (that’s what I did with my last one although he was a customer of mine at the time) or is that a bit too cheeky?

If the boiler is purchased from an installer that is registered on Vaillant's Advance installer scheme, you will get 7 years warranty. Have a look on Vaillant's website for an installer in your area. They would probably advise on some better controls too.

seems about 20% over priced. So about right for British Gas
They are improving then :cautious: back in the day of being an independent contractor for them they were 40-50% more than local installers but they offered interest free credit which was really unknown them days :!:

I hate interest free when there’s no discount for just one simple payment. It screams to me that it is overpriced. Nothing is 'free'.

Got no problems with the quote. They have their rates - you say yes or no
