Our house is gable end and very strong winds come from that corner.i have used 2 stakes to support it against the wind.my worry is it might topple over.i am sure there must be some cure for this.

Not much of a cure, even if you find out what is causing it, as far as I know. The only thing I can think of is to keep the base clear of weeds and mulch, and try and keep your tree healthy, the right nutrients and enough water. Healthy trees can fight off some types of fungus. Healthy also means tip-top bark, the part that protects the tree.

Looks typical of strimmer damage in its earlier life , if the wood is still solid and not showing any sign of rot it should be ok .It is posible to bridge graft but may be overkill for your tree .how far around is there a lack of bark?

It doesn't look like rot to me, as lostinlight said its impact damage from something.
I honestly wouldn't worry. If it's in a windy area it's likely to be much more strongly rooted than you think.

Having dug one of these out in April, I can assue you the roots do go fairly deep and are very strong. I live in a valley and have seen plenty of Ash or Birch trees blown over -- never seen a fallen apple tree. Only fallen apples.
