Renovating a room, have insulated and plasterboarded walls. While removing the coving with a breaking bar some parts of the ceiling seemed a bit "soft", in that they moved / bent a bit when forced. Not loads, just a bit. I noticed that the builders put in some extra screws when closing up the chimney hole.

Seeing that I am doing a refurb, do you think I should replace the ceiling too? Seems a bit too much, but also, long-term might be sensible? All is dry, so maybe just treat it from the loft with wood preserve instead? Or do nothing?

I take it the original is lath and plaster? If you can afford to lose 15mm just plasterboard over it (spray your woodworming stuff before boarding)- you'll be really annoyed if you get cracks in it a couple of years down the line. Obv mark where the joists are on the ceiling and use long screws (60mm at least) for the boards. It is normal to do the ceiling first (so the wallboards support the ceiling boards) but such is life

No idea what it is. But I can easily lose 15mm, maybe that would be a sensible option ...
I have not quite finished the plasterboards yet - there's still another 14cm or so above the 240cm boards to finish, so not too late to do it proper.
