Hi

House built in 1981. Looking at bedroom wall, and try as I may, can’t find any studs with magnets. Measured in from 16, then 24, spending ages but no cigar. Is it possible that this is egg box design? Thought they had smaller studs anyway?

Thanks

You won’t Adam and Eve this, but have a detector (Go out quite often)

Will give it s try and report back.

Another method is.

Get yourself the brightest lamp, torch you can find.

Place the beam of the light along the length of the wall, not directly on to the wall.

In a bright light used as above you may be able to see the different vertical studs, as a difference, albeit a slight visual difference that is the studs.

As for the wall being a Paramount Partition? is this an Ex-Council house? one check would be to to in as unobtrusive position as poss. punch a very small hole into the partition and see how thick it is?

Hi Ken

Two updates. Nope, definitely not ex council.

Tried detector and too blunt an instrument, radiator metal switches nearby. Had another twenty minutes and still zilch with the magnets. What should I be looking for if I did punch a hole? (Couldn’t I detect this from unscrewing light switch or socket?)

Longshanks, good evening.

If the partition is indeed a Paramount type, yes investigation at the light switch or Socket will allow access.

If the "Cavity" between the two layers of honeycomb paper will be small, less than 40 / 45.mm.

If you are going to look to remove the switch / socket you can using a mirror and light see some of the Honeycomb if it exists??

If Paramount then the studs are less than 50. mm. Square at 950. mm. C / C [Old 3 feet], no intermediate studs and a stud at ceiling and floor levels only.

screwdriver
hold the blade and bounce the handle off the surface and listen
also look at the opposite side off the wall for clues

Hi again Ken

Now tried torch test, but nothing visible to me. (Could be wallpaper)

Will check behind switch, but assume will be Paramount. Using old money, 2” studs, three feet apart and only at ceiling and floor level? Is that right? Do you mean screws supporting studs only at ceiling and floor level?

Just found ref to 1978 Wimpey house with Paramount. Ours is 1981 Wimpey

Longshanks, Hi.

OK the timber studs were fixed to the ceiling and floor in continuous lengths, there was an up right only where two panels were joined, you took your claw hammer and using the claw you ripped out the cardboard from the edge of each panel you were joining. Tap an upright into the already fitted panel and sliding the next panel in [the panel being fitted was already engaged into the ceiling and floor studs] slam the yet to be fitted panel so the panel being fitted slotted over the stud fitted to the previously fitted panel.

Fixings were roofing felt clout galvanised nails. all very cheap and cheerfull.

Another way of detecting Paramount is to gently push the mid point of the partition, if it deflects a small amount easily, that is paramount

Back in the day I made a load of money erecting them.

Ken.

Hi Ken

Just need to know.

1. Are there 2” stud partitions in wall?
2. How many are there along wall?
3. What distance from each other?
4. Why I find them with stud finder, if not magnets?

Thanks

Your not very good at finding things, any news on the stopcock?

I would say DIY isn't your thing.

Andy

Bit below the belt old chap.

Stopcock-no sign at 750mm. Will proceed with wet n’dry vac at weekend. Is that ok?

Paramount wall- thought you practical types would appreciate my brief factual questions. Perhaps would have been more constructive to provide responses to the questions? (Ie finding studs in Paramount/Egg box wall)

L

No, Not at all.

I'm only going by your 3 pages of how to clear out a stopcock, it should take no longer than 30 minutes with a wet vac and stick to loosen the mud and suck out.

Andy

Silly suggestion.

Would vibration induced in the wall by loud music or other sound be less where the wall was fixed to the studs than it would be between the studs where the wall was free to vibrate.

is probably not the best music in this case.
