Just gone to Carpetright for a quote and they want 30 quid for delivery.......?
Surely it comes with the fitter?

They also want 1.89 for each metre of gripperrod (49p elsewhere on line) and 5 quid for each m2 of 6mm underlay (99p online).

CR's 11mm underlay is 14 quid/m2 compared to 4.33 for 12mm Plushwalk, considered the best underlay around.

I know everybody has to make a living, but those prices are very steep....

To have a room 3.5m x 2.5m underlayed and carpeted in 11.99/m2 carpet (with 2m of gripperrod - the rest is OK) would cost us £252....

Am I a miserable old fart?

Can you provide your own underlay and gripper, and collect the carpet?
I have bought two £50 bits of vinyl from CR and just picked them up a few days later

They're a business, they tend to like to make money. Tho i don't think they're doing very well atm.
The 99p a sq mtr underlay will be carp.

Just goes to show the cost of TV advertising, comes home when the firm advertising passes on their TV costs to the punter in the street?

I once played CarpetRight off against a rival called CarpetWorld. Both on the same trading estate, both selling the exactly the same carpet but CW was £1 cheaper per sq/mtr.
Carpet was £24.99 metre in CR and £23.99 metre in CW. Got CR to reduce to £22.99 the went back to CW. They reduced by another £1 so went back to CR.
This went on until it got down to £15.99 at CW with free underlay, free grippers and free fitting. CR threw their hand in at that saying they couldn't compete. So I got my carpet (22sq/mtrs) supplied and fitted completely for around £350 something, instead of the original lower price which was way over £600
Being a good quality carpet at that price in the early 90's it was still going strong when I sold the house in 2013

Fair comment, I think every year that goes by I get more miserable!
It goes without saying I get older too, and I've always been farty!

I got carpets last year, for exactly the same carpet with a better underlay we paid much less.

Carpetright £2872.55
Local Guy £2126.00

Saving £746.55 :D

I experienced the same from Carpet Right, they will go bust within ten years.

Not CR admittedly but on the subject of delivery charges, we've recently bought two swivel armchairs from Furniture Village - nice chairs but £50 for delivery?
If I had a van & the warehouse (not the shop we ordered from) wasn't so far away I'd pick up the b....y things myself

Cost of keeping HGVs on the road and paying staff so they won't leave after 5 minutes passed onto you

We ended up getting a bigger piece of better quality carpet, with a better quality underlay, for £72 less.
