Which Whisky?

On my 18th birthday I fell in love with a much older woman in my local pub who could name any whisky that she sipped. I fell for it & it cost me £££'s, a valuable lesson learned.

I have always preferred the top shelf over the draughts, because in the 1000's of bars I have wobbled at I have only ever drunk beer at 2 that have lived up to their marketing expectations.

I am a whisky snob/connoisseur, call me what you want.

During a road trip around Scoatland a few years ago, we just happened to come across a sign, quite by accident, pointing towards the Dalwhinnie distillery. I have a very vague recollection of this visit, I remember that everyone else seemed to have a Merrykun accent & I remember that Dalwhinnie recorded the lowest temperature ever recorded in mainland Britain. I remember that our excellent guide wasn't actually Scottish & I remember the angels share from the ghost barrel.

What I don't remember is something absolutely fundamental to the whisky connoisseur & that is our most excellent guide telling me the only 5 whisky's worth drinking. Dalwhinnie obviously, & I remember Islay, but I cannot for the life of me remember the other 3.

You are the internets & you are my only hope.

Sounds to me just as snobby as drinking vino! I can't imagine there are just 5 bottles worth drinking out of all the malts in Scotland.

You've not had whiskey until you've has Mekong whiskey.......

Never been a whisky drinker until I acquired the taste about 2 years ago when I was feeling under the weather and my wife insisted it would help. Can't remember the blend, probably Teachers or Bells, but gradually got to like it. Then at a family party about 6 months ago and I was given an unknown brand for a taster. It was so smooth I immediately loved it. Turned out to be a single malt called Haig Club. At Christmas, without asking, I got 3 bottles of it. :)

I think taste in whisky, wine, or food is all a matter of personal taste. If you like it then that's all that matters.

Personally can't stand Whiskey / Whisky, but I am told there is a big difference between blended (Bells, Teachers etc) and single malt.

Glenlivet? Ardbeg? Glenmorangie? Laphroaig? Aberlour?

Certainly vague to say top five as it's all in the palate.

Cracked it. Extensive research has thrown up the possibility that I misheard the guide & focused on the possibility of only 5 whisky's worth drinking.

The reality is that there are 5 distinct & very different areas of Scoatland where whisky is produced . . . Each area having it's best distillery & subsequently there are only 5 products that a whisky drinker need concern themselve's with.
