High pressure issue

Hi all

I have a Vailant Turbomax VUW 242 (Yea I know its 20 years old but its been working away quite happily until now) that has recently been reading a higher than normal pressure (had always been on about 1.2 bar previously) which now is 2 bar cold then rising to just under 3 when on about 4.5 on the heat setting.

I was supposedly covered by BG homecare but when the BG engineer came out to do a service and spotted the pressure he said it was due to the pressure vessel and that he couldn't re-pressurise it as the diaphragm might split and the part was no longer available if it did. Also, I was now no longer covered on the homecare insurance!

My understanding is that re-pressuring the vessel is a fairly standard procedure and that ALL boilers require this from time to time? I was also somewhat pee'd off to find the diaphragm is readily available from plumbase for a mere £10!

Any advice on what I should do next please?

Good try, that diaphragm is nothing to do with the expansion vessel, you do however have a case as they have the complete expansion vessel , so if he did split it, (very unlikely) then they can change the whole expansion vessel (you cant change the diaphragm in that vessel) or they could fit an external vessel, get back on the phone and complain, re-charging the expansion vessel is part of the service.

Thanks Ian - did think it was supposed to be a part of the service, The engineer just kept repeating "its a 20 year old boiler" again and again like a stuck record.........

Here I go then, 3 hours on hold to be past from pillar to post with BG I go!

Did you not also get told you need a power flush and a new boiler ? That's the usual hymn sheet that they sing from !

doesnt matter how old the boiler is, they took it on contract and took your money so its up to them to sort your problem

UPDATE: Complained to BG, a different engineer came this morning and couldn't have been a nicer chap. Immediately saw that the filling loop valve was dripping water and had been slowly filling the boiler and so raising the pressure. Replaced the valve and 2 secs to re-pressurise the pressure vessel and job done! He did not speak highly of the first chap!

BG do come out with some bolony..That is a new one though...Charge you for a service but do not touch it incase it breaks!!!..lol...Will try that one on my customers!..

good and bad engineers in every company but in large companies like BG and similar it is so easy for the lazy and useless ones to hide

Do they hide, or is BG still unionised so it's difficult to get rid of people ? I'm not knocking unions, I was employed by one for some years and they looked after me and took on my previous pension

yes there is a bit of that, I know some engineers who run to the union when ever they are asked anything, years back I worked as a subbie in Dockyards and the unions shut them down with their crazy demands, they do have their place but so many little Hitlers become union reps
