Hi all,
Looking to install a log burner so I opened up the closed fireplace. From what I can see there's a gas liner there, which needs to come out. In short, there's quite a few things that need doing however, after gaining access to get a better view of the chimney, I saw something way up in the chimney that looks like a register plate.

I guess the question is, does anybody have an idea what it might be?

I guess that could be loosely described as a register plate.....its blanking off the flue and prevents crap from falling down.
Personally Id remove that contraption and construct a register plate just within the flue void. The wood burner needs a solid pipe to reach through the register plate where it connects on to the correct specification twin wall liner.
John :)

How easy do you think it'll be to remove it?
Would it have to come out through the top of the chimney (roof) or can it be slid down the liner down to the bottom?
Hope that makes sense.

Goodness knows how that was fitted - is there enough room to stand in there? Certainly I'd try to slide it down the liner so you can remove it. I'm also unsure if the liner actually passes through that plate - difficult to tell!
I've never known a plate like that installed from above - maybe the chimney was broken in to at some point?
The flue void is just the space where the flexible liner is positioned, i.e where the smoke would rise when that was an open fire.
The register plate is usually positioned just out of sight above the wood stove, and a solid stove pipe extends through it, coupling onto the flexible liner. All these parts are available to buy but maybe a HETAS team should install it.
John :)

It's probably a closure plate which is similar to a register plate. It's purpose is as burnerman said to stop any rubbish coming into the fireplace. the s/s flue goes through to the top. With a register plate the stove pipe is fixed to it, but the flue isn't lined with an s/s liner.
Nowadays a register plate is quite rare as Hetas fitters prefer to use a liner, rather than the old flue.
Agree with above that it's really a job for Hetas if you are not sure.
PS it also stops any loose insulation falling through, so when you take them out the lot can fall into the fireplace.
