Can anyone advise please. We have a fireplace but no fire, our chimney has a liner and on the stack is what looks like an old cast concrete fancy cowl.
Could I get this liner swept and use this fire place with a log burner?
Thanks very much

Hi it sounds like you ahe a gas flue liner installed i would have thougfht it would be better to take the liner out and remove the what sounds like a gc1 type terracotta cowl and pu a propper chimney pot on with a wire cage in to stop birds falling down the flue liners are normally used on gas appliances not for solid fuels providing the chimney is smoke tested to test it for leakes from joints etc and its pulling ok without any extra ventilation in the room dont forget you are burning a fossil fuel and you still get carbon monoxide from a wood burner as well check with the output of the fire and the manufacturers recomendations for ventilation requirements to the room its installed in
do not install it in a double room at one end where there is a gas fire
or you will run into all sorts of problems with the gas fire it will pull the fumes back down the flue and try to go up the wood burner flue ???

The other thing to look out for which is important is if you live in a 3 story
house and a window is left open in the top room and a door left open to the room where the fire is you will a chimney effect this should all be tested for before any instalation with smoke bombs in the chimney breasts

i know it seems a bit complicated burt things have to be safe
i know of 2 deaths because of wood burners

best of luck mick

Thanks for the advice.

The cowl at the moment does not look terracotta although it does look concrete, its like a tripod with a pointed hat.

Thanks

Asbestos/cement cowl  That liner won`t do for solid fuel
