Filling a drainage ditch with gravel

I have a drainage ditch running along the back of my garden. It often fills with water to it's 4- 5foot depth but rarely/never overflows.

I am resurfacing my large driveway which is currently pea gravel. I estimate I will have 20-30 tonnes to dispose of.

I am thinking I can chuck it all in the ditch? A form of French drain if you like.

Can anyone see and problems with doing this?

Note that a drainage ditch is regarded as a watercourse for legal matters

A ditch flows to an outlets somewhere ( unlike a french drain) you would be blocking the ditch causing it to flood .

If you fill the ditch with stones, the water with have nowhere to go

Advertise the gravel on gumtree, or ask round a few neighbours
