Having lived and worked for several years in Germany where the title Herr Ingenieur (Engineer) is protected I have an opinion about the way the title Engineer is used in the UK
give me peace , a lad comes on a site and asks for some advice and you lot of wannabees have to come up with this shoite, the lad is correctly asking for advice , not ridicule , and not the shoite that the dont know brigade have to offer

the lad is correctly asking for advice

And the advice given was to first learn the basics of electricity.

The regulations say what can be done, what should be done and what should not be done when installing electrical equipment. They provide little if any reason why things should or should not be done.

Almost anyone who can use tools can blindly install equipment using the circuit diagram and/or instruction supplied.

Instructions such as "" Connect Terminal A5 to terminal X9 using wire GQ123 color Red "".

but without basic knowledge of electricity they cannot fault find.

Having basic knowlege about what an electric current is, what makes a current flow ( or not flow ) is necessary if the person is to be any more than an installation wireman.

Do not get me wrong, a skilled installation wireman is a valuable and often essential asset to his or her employer.

Bernard is spot on. Understanding the electrical principles first, then he would be able to appreciate the Regs. That's the way they teach at college and for a good reason.
