Structural engineers / Essex

I am after a structural engineer to inspect my ground and design piling foundations for 7m x 4m extension.
What is the standard price? Anyone based in Essex?

Really, didn't know that . Not being funny but can't you just ring one or two and ask to go in and see them at their office ? They must be having it too easy
p s there was a time when some architects didn't want to bother with small domestic projects like house extensions but that changed after 2008
Things must have bucked up again in the building world .

Unfortunately, piling design is something most SEs would not wish to get involved with. OP may have to look a little further than his locality.
Alternatively, local piling companies might know of people who would be prepared to undertake the design.

The piling companies tend to use their own contractors to do the design, so they’ll be able to include it in their quote for the works.

FYI the cost of the design element of my piling job done in Dec 18 was £250 + vat.

Total job cost £9,500 inc Vat for 11 x 5.5m extension including trench digging with piles going down to 9-12m.

If a structural engineer has not inspected the site how does anybody know the ground conditions warrant piling

Some areas just require piling. Like where I live - it's formally sand dunes so everything gets piled. Don't know about the OP's location, but in some places you don't need an inspection to know.

I mustve struck lucky, I did a job a couple of years back that ended up needing piles (customer neglected to mention his huge patio was once a large, deep pond that was backfilled). I rang one SE and they did it in a few days, surprisingly without a site visit. The spec was driven piles, torqued to xKn.

Yes , that is usually why piling is used but who has decided that burts started off by saying a structural engineer was required to inspect the ground

Could be many reasons. Houses just around from me (in Essex) were built over an old dump and all have deep pilings. Maybe some people live close to or on marshland. Maybe a history of subsidence in the area.
Maybe built over an ancient Indian burial ground....
