Artex or not?

I'm thinking of stripping the ceiling in the bathroom, I don't think the celling is artex, it's white but underneath is grey so I think it's a textured plaster painted. Can anyone help?

The house was built in 1995, so not majorly worried about Asbestos, just a bit nervous!

Notice that this is your first post on the site? if no one else does welcome to the board, loads of info on here.

From the image you posted, the material on the ceiling does indeed appear to be Artex.

Artex could and did contain a low, to very, very low level of Asbestos the Asbestos incorporated was so called "White" Asbestos, this material is the lowest in terms of danger, brown and blue Asbestos are the real killers.

Up until about [2000] 1999 actually, Artex had, as above the possibility of containing Asbestos, a so called ACM [Asbestos Containing Material]

If you have concerns, it is possible to easily have the Artex tested there are several UK sites on the web that will test samples for you at a reasonable cost, you take a scrape sample send to the test house and wait a result.

If the material does contain Asbestos as proven by the test then you will have to contact your Local Authority to see what their regulations are about the disposal of any Asbestos material.

As an aside? have a look on this site, use the "Search" function [located at the top right of this page] to get a load more down to earth information about ACMs and disposal Etc.

Looks like stipple finish artex, The problem seems to be very minimal, tens of thousands of properties have ceilings with the same finish, so long as it is sealed with an emulsion finish it should be OK.
If you are worried get a plasterer in to screed over the top to give a flat finish, Plasterers are making a good living with this latest trend " leveling off " artex ceilings

That is definitely the dreaded stippled artexed, I would just get it skimmed and paint it.

Thank you all for your replies, I will get it tested for Asbestos before deciding what to do

Asbestos was banned in 1999.. as above get it skimmed - Otherwise personally I think its the OK kind of texture to have on a ceiling. If you remove it you are unlikely to find a smooth surface to paint!

There is a possibility that it is an Artex finish and that it may or may not contain asbestos. It doesn't necessarily follow that your health is at risk. Asbestos only becomes a problem when it is damaged and the fibres become airborne.

Looks more like that polystyrene insulated stuff,is it soft when you scratch or try and dent it ?

Many thanks for replying. From the outside it's like have been coated with oil paint when I started scratch it is seems like plaster powder (chalk). Really worried as I was in the room with my little child.

Your second set of pictures look the same as we had here and that. turned out to be a harmless texture coating over polystyrene , we did have it tested to make sure though.

Confusing but the pictures are from two different people so I assume not the same ceiling?

I was aware of that opps but thought gc1967 was comparing op picture to that of the first pic by Ena which does look like polystyrene rolls .Ive just stripped acres of the stuff off walls and ceilings, some was covered in emulsion and some with brushed on textured coating but both had flaked off like in Ena’s last picture
