Mk2 Kuga Powershift (title edited)

I bought a new Landcruiser based on its bulletproof reputation, it was a complete lemon, fuel pump failed, gearbox heat exchanger failed, frankly in 6 years it had fallen to bits, guess I was just unlucky as they *do* have a good rep, just not mine!

Yes, I've heard of these 'experienced' repairers. However:
If they do fix the transmissions, how long do they last? Million dollar question.

Had a few hours on it yesterday afternoon, looks a right ball ache to take out..

Shes out!, stripped the clutch packs, the dampers are absolutely shot, terrible design!.

Negative side is the new gearbox doesn't fit!, positive side is it looks like they've moved the dampers back into the flywheel on the 2017 box.

So decided to design a conversion plate and modify the 2017 flywheel to fit (after I've bought it).

Seems worth the effort to get the updated gearbox working.

You're a better man than me and 100000 times more patient. I sincerely hope after all this investment you get the car you wanted (a reliable one, which is not a huge ask) and can enjoy it with your lovely family.

To be honest it's turned personal now, it will tow our caravan again if it kills me!.

Ridiculous what you have to take off to remove a gearbox nowadays...
 
Wondering why on earth those clutch damping baskets are flying apart.....it's not as if the driver can enhance their departure like the conventional clutch :(

No, it's all down to the PCM and TCU what the engine and gearbox does!.

The clutches look fine, plenty of meat left just the plastic has let it down.

There was a fair bit missing, this has all been spat out chewed up and run through the gearbox.

Need to learn CAD now so I can get a conversion plate made. Thinking FreeCad is the best option?.

Plenty of measuring / drawing today then back to work tomorrow.

Had a nice walk out with our Labrador this morning, does wonders for relaxing the brain!.
 
I can't see what is causing the plastic spring retainers to fail.....for sure, yours can't be the only transmission failing like this :(

Fatigue, heat and being made out of plastic I think!.

Theres loads of these boxes failing, reading between the lines most people pay a fortune for a rebuild (with plastic) then get shut!.

Other common one is clearing all the codes and putting the car though auction.

Will see what my 2017 flywheel looks like tomorrow when it turns up. The drive coupling is completely different between my 2013 and the 2017 unit.
 
I'd certainly agree with the heat issue - there must be a much greater shock loading to the springs that meets the eye.
For sure Keith, your findings should go much further than this forum - preferably back to the manufacturer, should they give a toss.

Ford UK don't care, have been in correspondence and the old "out of warranty, tough luck" spiel.

Someone mentioned Watchdog just to kick them in the arse so I've sent some details in this morning.

The damper is genuinely "not fit for purpose", can I be arsed to go through trading standards etc though for probably no good outcome at the end.

Can't believe Ford have got away with it personally.
