Hi,
Stupidly I have marked around the front of the plasterboard box and cut the wall.
The hole is now too big (argh) but the lugs still attach to the wall.
What is the best way out of this mess? Thankfully its in a cupboard under the stairs so doesn't need to be too pretty....

If it were me (and we've all done such things!), I'd probably glue small strips of plasterboard onto the sides of the hole (maybe only one side and one top or bottom).

Kind Regards, John

Can you fit the cut-out back in place, and fix with a piece of batten and some woodscrews.

And then cut a new hole for the box to the left or right, or above or below??

OR

cut it bigger and fit a 2 gang for security then a finger plate to cover the gaps.
You didn't say what size.
If it's single gang then extend both sides (But not full height!! and use a 2 gang.
If it's 2 gang then extend both sides (But not full height!! and use a dual: https://www.screwfix.com/p/appleby-dual-35mm-dry-lining-box/22772 (that was the fix I did and used 2 single sockets instead of a double)
or if you actually need a 2 gang: https://www.screwfix.com/p/appleby-dual-35mm-double-single-dry-lining-box/60079 and a blanking plate.

wood for the trees...
Don't feel bad, I've certainly done the same myself, more than once (and nearly did this time!) - when information is contained in the title of a thread, but not in any of the messages the thread contains, it's very easy to overlook it!

Kind Regards, John
