Stopping lap lines and patches when painting ceiling

I'm having a nightmare painting my ceiling.

I did 3 coats of Dulux trade vinyl Matt which was HORRIBLE paint. So thick it's ridiculous which I think has left me with a bad start.

I've since done another 2 coats of some Valspar paint I borrowed from the in-laws who are also decorating. No bad, bit thin and not very white, so i went and got some Leyland Trade Vinyl Matt which is a decent thickness and coverage.

The problem I have though is no matter the direction i roll, I always have patches and lap lines.

I have no issues with walls, even when using a silk paint, but I cannot for the life of me get this ceiling to an acceptable standard.

Anyone got any tips or suggestions before o lose the plot. 7th coat tomorrow, it's getting a bit silly...

The heat won't help at the moment. If you're using trade paint it will stand a some water to thin it which will help given the temperature. You just need to keep a wet edge and don't over roll it.

Stick with the trade paint, it's far far better than retail stuff.

Ok. I'll thin it down a little and just keep going. Ironically I used the retail stuff on the walls without issue.

I usually go with little greene which is fantastic, but I can't afford £90/5L at the moment

That's pretty steep!!

Any chance you can do it first thing in the morning when it's cooler, that'll help? I've painted in the height of summer before and it can be very frustrating!

I've actually got Aircon in the room. I can only do it in the evening so I might turn it on for a bit before I paint (and off whilst painting so not blowing)

I'll admit it's extremely frustrating. Especially when I've managed to do the entire house without issue last year

Interesting post and I fully concur with Evostance, having recently had the same problems. Painted a hall and landing ceiling with Dulux trade Vinyl Matt and found it awful. It was fairly hot and I diluted it with about 10% water but still incredibly difficult to roll smoothly.Gave up after two coats as it left streaks and patches. The pros seem to swear by it but I have been self decorating for 40 years and used to just get any matt white emulsion from the sheds and never had a problem. Anyway who wants to have to mess around mixing paint? Also used a coloured version on walls and whilst that gave good results and is wipeable it takes nothing to dig it and the top vinyl part almost peels off. One to avoid from now on.

Interesting you say this.

I put Dulux Retail silk on the wall. 3 days later I caught it with painting tape and it literally peeled the paint off like rubber. Barely stuck to the mist coat at all.

As for the ceiling... I'm currently on coat 7, using Leyland Trade. It's not bad, but I can't get rid of the streaks still

I had 100% success on a flat ceiling with CROWN OBLITERATING EMULSION.

I cut in the edges first, then rolled the ceiling with a long handled roller. I did the rollering fast, but orderly. Not a single streak.

Don't use ordinary Crown emulsion, it's like milk.

I am about to paint a ceiling in a newly plastered room. The light sources are unfavorable so I will be using Dulux Trade Ultra Flat paint. It is more matt than their Supermatt. I am painfully aware that standard dulux trade matt emulsion will potentially look very uneven.

Neither paint is suitable for walls though as it is impossible to keep clean but you wont have an issue with flashing (ie inconsistent sheen)

When using emulsion on particularly hot days- close all of the windows, not particularly nice but it helps to increase the drying time, alternatively add some Floetrol or XIM bonder to the paint to help it flow.
