I'm swapping a bathroom extractor fan as the old one was squeaking. The old one has a timer, the new one doesn't. The picture shows the existing wiring (there is an uninsulated earth in there too). I'm presuming the yellow one is the switch live?

IF it is then just connect Yellow to L and Blue to N. Terminate the Red and sleeved Earth safely.
I tried this, but no luck. Wasn't getting power no matter if the light switch was on or off
Somewhat confusing ???

Have you tried oil? Cheaper and easier than a new fan.

Do you have a fused connector or three-pole switch anywhere?
If it was working before, then it should work now.
Connect the fan to a plug and test it.
You mean it does not work with the Switched Live instead of the Permanent Live.
If so, then you need to determine why the Switch Live does NOT become live when switched on.
Did it used to come on with the light or did you have a separate switch?
Check that the Yellow wire copper core has not snapped inside the insulation. Does it feel floppy at any point near the end?
Otherwise you will need to find the other end of the Yellow wire.
It's probably at the light fitting, but could be at the switch.
