Hi. I’m renovating my bathroom and just hacked tikes off a partition wall built around a large copper boiler and this is underneath. just wondering if anyone can help me identify this and whether it’s asbestos.

Thanks to anyone that replies.

Thanks for replying. The grey is a concrete texture and the threads are very small and straw like.

I’ve ripped out of the rest of the house interior. I didn’t even think about asbestos until I saw this.

Just out of interest, asbestos fibres are finer than a human hair - in fact they are so fine that a single fibre cannot be seen with the human eye, so you wouldn't be able to see it like that. When you find asbestos in a building it's generally combined with other building materials such cement, roof felting, etc. or more obviously as an insulator (think old ceramic-type wired electrical fuses, old electric fires, ironing board heat stands - the grey ones, etc). The use of asbestos was finally banned in the UK in 1999, but its' use had been restricted for many years before that, so more modern stuff shouldn't contain any.

Anyone concerned should take a look at this site

Actually, the asbestos ban came into force at the end of 1999, although the most unhealthy products on the market (containing blue and brown asbestos) were outlawed in the UK in 1985. See here for full details.

Wearing a mask isn't the only thing you need to do when you are dealing with (suspected) asbestos.
