I am planning to do a single side extension.
There is a 3-4m in height conifer in the area of question.
I would say the stump is approx. 1-2m from where the nearest footings will be laid.
I don't plan to start the extension until next year

Questions;
Is it wise to get the conifer removed asap? I will be removing the stump and most of the roots I can get to?
Is there a chance any building work could be delayed once the tree is removed?
My plans are soon to be drawn up, I guess it should be mentioned on the plans that there was a tree there?

The ground may well heave from the excess moisture after removal.

Generally it can take many months for the ground to stabilise, but you will need specialist advice and ground tests to assess the actual risks. One option would be to pollard it and gradually remove it over several years, and this will not cause sudden changes of the ground.

whatever you do, it's best to retain enough of the stump/trunk to be useful when removing the root.
Unless you have the root ground down.

I made a mistake a few years ago not doing that.... was a nightmare getting a few stumps out!

A 3 to 4 metre confier doesnt sound all that big - is it an ornamental garden conifer which wont grow beyond 5metres?

Thats a bit different from a leylandii or thuja that might grow 30 metres.

I would think the trunk of your conifer isnt that big - less than 8" -in wich case a mattock will grub out the roots, but itll take a few hours.

I might start cutting the branches from bottom to top ....
Will need to get hold of a shredder

It’s prob around 6-8m ish in height. Shapped like a ball.

A conifer that size will result in land heave, my neighbour removed his one, as a result i started to get cracks on my patio over 3 years and my outbuilding started to crack as well as the roots were spread under my garden.
