Hi guys, hoping for some thoughts on trying to find of a random loud thud/bang if possible.

We own a 3 bed semi detached and every now and again we can hear a banging noise. It sounds like a door closing really loudly. Just assumed it was the neighbour and had done for a while but she mentioned the other day that she hears this noise too and sometimes when no one is in our house.

Can’t pinpoint exactly where the noise is coming from or even if it’s our house or next door but just wondering if anyone had any thoughts? I feel like I’ve been hearing it since we moved in nearly 2 and a half years ago, it’s definitely been a while anyway but hadn’t really thought much about it as I assumed it was next door closing doors.

Thanks in advance.

I used to hear a random thud when I was in bed about 15 mins after having a shower. It sounded like my unvented hot water cylinder 'popping'. I eventually tracked it down to a noisy/slightly sticky bypass valve as the hot water was kicking in after I’d emptied the tank. After I’d drained and flushed our system for some work to be done and refilled it with inhibitor, it stopped. I put it down to the inhibitor/flush having some kind of lubricating property that freed up the sticky valve.

Loft hatch lift by wind? Water hammer can occur when you turn off a mains water supply with a thud.

Appreciate the suggestions. Loft hatch is firmly in place, doesn’t move at all. Can’t speak for the neighbour’s mind you so possibly. Doesn’t seem to have much correlation to the wind though that’s the only thing.

Doesn’t seem to directly relate to any any water activity either. Although again, not sure about next door. It’s tricky without being able to pinpoint where it’s coming from.

If neighbours hear it when you are out then more likely to be related to their activity? So you can’t discount things like water hammer without questioning neighbours.Water tank may take some time to fill afer use and sudden valve shut off can cause very loud thump.

i'd go for water activity - possibly due to utility increase in pressure and its affect on dodgy isolaters or appliances.

Got a teenager trapped in the cellar? could be them trying to escape :)

Thanks, bit of a layman but what do you mean by “utility increase in pressure”. Cheers.

heard the neighbour's having a right go last night.
this morning i saw her at the front door - "Oh hi" she said" did you hear them cats on the roof top last nnight?"
"No, but i heard you & him having a right go at it."

Are you on a main road?

We live a bit set back from a main 40mph road.
No apparent pattern to it but , when a large wagon goes past, there is a wobble (not unlike an earthquake ; exactly the same feeling as this one) felt when I'm lying in bed.
I do wonder if there is a collapsing drain under the road, which is amplifying certain trucks ' weight....
