Morning all,
I have a nightmare problem, our garden and always been a slight gradient from the back of the house to the fence. I decided that I'd had enough of the wasted garden and had a structural engineer define a retaining wall. While we have all been on lockdown I decided to begin to dig out some of the area. In the process I have hit a manhole with the 1m diameter (approx) x 1m deep. My guessing is if I remove the concrete lid and one of the two rings I should be approx right height....I can add a few bricks if required to lift the height. Problem is how the hell do I lift the concrete lid ring and then one of them rings. Had a look at the spec for different suppliers and it is approx 700kgs - 900kgs.....micro digger won't lift anything like that.....anyone got any inventive ideas on how to remove this?

Cheers,
Ant

Is it a shared manhole ?

What goes through this manhole. ?

If sewage or surface water from houses other than your house goes through the manhole then it is a shared sewer and is "owned" by the local water company. You need to talk to them about altering the manhole.

In the photo it looks like a solid concrete biscuit on top - no access lid ???

If you have space and can get secure fixing on to the lid then this might be a solution.

This method was used to lift a cover that was then replaced at the same height. In your case the two supports ( in orange ) should be blocks that can be removed layer by layer to get the lid down the ground level. The supports need to be secure and not able to topple

Its foul water....I've secured the steel plate on temporary because when it was found it just had a loose steel manhole lid...yep not fixed...not safe.

I have two young children and was worried one would end up in it. Our house and two neighbours go through it....mad thing is there is another 3m away from this.

Using piles of blocks, you could get a car jack neat the area. Then get something in the gap far enough and use the jack to increase the gap so a wedge can go in. It would be easier with several blocks and jacks. Farm jacks might work

Good idea....i could lift enough to get a few scaffold poles under....and roll it off, then chop it up into moveable bits.

In which case it is a shared service and almost certainly the water company will have adopted it.

You DO need to speak to them about it. If a bit of debris falls into the chamber and is washed into and blocks a pipe then there could be a bill coming your way from the water company if they have to clear it.
