Hi can anyone tell me how long after sowing grass seed I should start to see something happen? It's eight days now and nothing is happening.

A lot will depend on how warm the ground is.

Given you and I are on a nearly similar Latitude, it is far from warm over here??

Ken

So I don't need to worry just yet? I followed the guidelines on box. I waited until the temperatures where correct.

No. There is a cat next door. Which is not great because no birds come to the garden

You have to sow three times the amount you need. One for the birds one that doesn't grow and finally one that makes it.

nothing to worry about just yet, ground is still cold, could take as long as a fortnight. Keep it damp and keep the birds off it.
If you had sewed it in the autumn it would have started by day 8.

As Munroist above, in the last week the weather up here[ in the "north"] has during the night gone down to about freezing, even today, the low cloud, even with me at Sea level produced a smirry sort of rain, in effect we were in the lower reaches of a cloud, as for the temperature?? taking into account wind chill it cannot been above 5 Degrees C??

Ken.

It has been warm in Northern Ireland today was, around 15 degrees and down to around 8 at night. I water every evening.

Someone I know/work for asked me this same question, I said come on, don't worry, it's only been a week or two, give it a chance.

A few weeks later there was still nothing, so they took the packet back to the shop to complain.

They had followed the instructions to the letter, broadcast it very diligently across the measured area, watered it in etc so were a bit annoyed at it.

It turned out what they had bought a month previously was grass FEED (fertilizer) not grass SEED!

How often should I be watering the area? It's 16 degrees where I am now. Sun is coming and going. Are you only supposed to water at sundown?

Best to water in the evening so it has time to penetrate the soil instead of evaporating in the sun.
What type of soil do you have? Being in Ireland is it peaty or is it a well draining area?
If it's well draining, e.g. sandy, then it will need watering quite often so first thing in the morning and again in the evening may be advisable.
Until it starts growing you don't need to worry about the grass burning if the sun is hot.
Did you rake over the seeds when you sowed them or leave them exposed?
