Hi, I need to cut one of my ceiling joists(pic2) to fit my new hatch/ladder. There was a hatch there already and one joist as can be seen in pic1 was already cut. I have added some pictures that will hopefully show what type of roof I have and would be really grateful if anyone in the know, can tell me if I can cut out the second joist and double trim it either side, with no problems?I have goggled it several times with conflicting answers. The joists are 75x50mm and span right across the loft and out to the outside walls. Also would it be ok to use 95x45mm timber for the frame, as I can only find finished timber 5mm smaller in width and length. Any help would be most appreciated.
Kind regards, Kev.

Hi, they are about 18 inches apart from the centre of each one..
Regards, Kev.

Its should be OK to cut that joist but not before you've worked out how you are going to "frame" the hatch in.
The whole opening will need trimming - google for triming pics.
Trimming gives safe construction, esp if you are near to a stairwell.
Your 95mm x 45mm will do, and you can plane and sand the exposed face or use some pre-finished facing material.

Thank you for your reply bobasd. Much appreciated. The finish of the hatch is not a problem, as it is a loft ladder complete with hatch that I am installing. I was just scared of cutting the second joist, so thank you for the information.

All the best, Kev.

For example: you might need to double up more than the "remaining ones on either side" - you might need to do much more but thats beyond your question, and looking at plan views of trimming lay-outs will give you the relative info.

I did qualify my post "but not before" etc,

Kev, please note that he said "it should be OK", I am telling you it would not be OK. You need to double up each joist either side the one you are taking out. The poster above me has changed his name on here at least 4 times. He also knows nothing about me or the work that I have been involved with for the past 30 years. Also there are a lot of tradesmen who find the above poster a bit of a p-rat.

'Bob' why have you changed your name 4 times???????

The key thing about the above poster is that he has no knowledge of this work. So, OP beware of amateurs like him who post whatever pops into their head's.

I did qualify my post "but not before" etc, but such as the above amateur dont read whats there they prefer to fantasise things instead.
why is this necessary?
people come here for an overview , other peoples opinions are as important as yours!

Thank you to everyone that replied. It is much appreciated.

Kind regards, Kev.
