Hi all.

Looking for some advice on fixings for heavy duty shelves into thermalite blocks and plaster board.
The brackets are 4mm flat steel with scaffold board shelve.

There isn't much a 3" or 4" (5's) into a brown plug cant hold. Your biggest concern will be crushing the plasterboard i.e. hoping the brackets line up with the dabs. That said, a few blobs of adhesive on the backs of the brackets will help a lot.
Only squirt the adhesive on the bracket after drilling all the holes and doing a dry run.
Look out for pipes, plugs and switches above and below the intended drilling zone.

I don’t get the adhesive thing because isn’t it just adhering to a layer of paint which could pull off very easily?

Its not reliant on the adhesive. The adhesive acts as an effective supplement. A sudden shock to the bracket, as you say, would remove the paint.
The trick is using the power of the adhesive to nullify the need to overtighten the screws, thus negating the need to pull the plasterboard inward.

I guess the adhesive being under a lot of pressure due to the screws helps

Use 5.0x80mm or 100mm screws and brown plugs. Drill holes to a min depth that will accept two plugs, knock first one in to the end of the hole using the screw, remove screw, put in second plug, screw on bracket being careful not to overtighten. Adhesive is something Ive never thought of but seems like a good idea too.
