Second storey options.

About 4 years ago I had a single detached garage changed to be a single storey side extension, see photos below for before and after.
I now wish to extend above to make a second storey so that we can add two additional rooms - extra bedroom and a study as working from home is going to become more common.
I am not sure how deep or wide the foundations are for the ex-garage but if they are not as wide as the rest of the house are what options are there to ensure there is enough support strength for a second storey or a solution that can be engineered?
Knocking down the existing extension is not an option.

Yes, no one can design anything unless they know the foundation situation.

The alternative is to either assume the foundations are satisfactory or unsatisfactory and design on that basis, and you pay extra for unnecessary work or pay extra when you start to build and need to change the design.

I assume the garage was constructed at the same time as the house, although it looks like it was exempt from B Regs. From experience of inspecting new housing in most cases the garages foundations were excavated to a similar depth as the house, occasionally the JCB drivers would change the bucket to a narrower 450mm bucket so it may not be wide enough.
When you carried out the conversion did you build a new inner leaf of blockwork and was it subject to B Regs?

All the work was subject to building regs. It does have an inner leaf on the 3 external walls. For the wall alongside our neighbours land (left side) the blockwork was installed on the existing surface. The front of what used to be the garage had two concrete steel reinforced lintels spanning the width of the garage door plus a further two shorter lintels to fill the space between what used to be the pathway between the house and the garage at the front and rear of the extension. Each of those lintels caters for the outer and inner leafs.

In that case rather than asking here as we are just guessing, speak directly to building control, assuming you used the local authority then they will be able to confirm more or less straight away, if you used a private inspector then you need to contact them, unless it was AEDIS in which case I'm not sure how you would do that since their recent debacle.
