Hi all,

Total decorating beginner here!

I've stripped the wallpaper from a wall with the intention of painting it.

Beneath the wallpaper is a coat of what I'm guessing is some sort of primer/sealer.

There are a few small patches where this layer has come away exposing the plaster underneath - here's a photo of one of them:

Is it just a case of sanding the edges of these patches to smooth them out before applying the undercoat or are there extra steps I should be taking?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Doh!

Is it possible to correct a thread title... it should read "Prepping a wall for painting after removing wallpaper"

Edit: found the option to change it :)

You're in for some pain, I fear. That's not a coat of primer/sealer, that's some old coats of paint. They've partially come off the wall when you stripped of the wallpaper. I've dealt with this myself in the past and it was an absolute pain in the backside, so I hope someone here has some excellent advice for you.

The way I dealt with it was to use a filler knife and pry off all the bits that were already loose (unfortunately, this could end up taking ages as more and more will come off). Then I lightly sanded the edges and applied filler. If you're as unlucky as I was you'll then find that the paint adheres differently to old paint as it does to the bits you've just filled. I tried everything from mistcoats to primers, to Zinser Bin... and eventually had someone come in to just skim the whole damn wall.

Thanks for the reply and advice, WoOt. Skimming the whole wall, cripes!

Is there a specific type of filler for this sort of issue?

If there is lots of it patches like that I would be looking for a plasterer to skim the wall to save lots of stress.

This advice would've saved me hours. Days even. How big is the wall? How many patches like this do you have? Are there other areas like this one, even tiny ones? Or blisters?

I like Gyproc Easi Fill, but trust me depending on the answers above... it might not be worth it.

Thanks for the replies, all.

WoOt, the wall is approx 2m by 4m and there are 5 patches like this, the biggest being approx 11cm x 6cm and a couple of them are tiny.

how did you do it?

Hi John, there is a Thread Tools option at the top right of the thread if you expand that there is an Edit Title option.
