Hi all,
I have bought engineered wood from Wickes
When I try joining two planks together they look like this, is this normal?

There is still a large gap in between and they’re effectively only touching in two points

I would say no.
Had that issue before a few years ago (and also from Wickes).
They told me that I should look at batch number on pack and get similar numbers as the cutting tool wears as it cuts changing shape of cut. So need to get all the planks to have been cut near the same time period.

Note that this is same for wall paper where the colour changes during printing.

Is there a batch number on yours?

I’ll check if there is a batch number
Should I ask them to replace them?

Yes, you cannot use them like that.

The problem is that I have ordered something like 60 boxes!

I’ve checked and there are 2 different batch numbers, I remember they came from 2 different warehouses because of the quantity I ordered

You need to keep the two batches separate, and use them for different room areas.

I think the ones I’ve used are from the same batch
I can tell because each box has some full 120 cm planks and some 70cm and 50cm planks
Other boxes are 80cm and 40cm
But I’ve only fitted the ones that are full 120cm, 70 and 50

If there is a tool problem, then I don’t see how they should fit even if from the same batch

The issue is that the tool wears down as it cuts the slot.
Not an issue if slot cut the same day.

But your batch dates numbers are a reverse date format (year mth date) showing the two were made three months apart.

In that time there could have been a lot of wear in the cutting tool, or a new cutting tool, both of which change the shape of the slot.
I was luck as I was able to go back into Wickes and sort through their stock and find the final two packs I needed.

But what I mean is: the tool that cuts the “tongue” is not the same that cuts the “groove” (I know it’s not the proper terms) so one tool could be more worn than the other one and still end up with a plank with incompatible interlocks left and right

You can’t stand boards on edge and have them lock together, they need to be flat and tapped together.
