Newel Post - how to find the fixings

What's wrong with that newel post?
A good sand down stain and varnish will make it look new.
If you really want a new, new look, veneer it with hardwood thin board.
Easy enough and would avoid structural problems.

Theres no hand rail at the moment and the current newel post is too small

You can make it bigger by boarding it up with thicker wood.
Some sort of veneer but thicker.

the issue is that I have already bought a newel post. I was under the impression that the newel post is not a structural part and I would just be able to replace it. To send it back is costing me a lot of money due to the size of it. So, I am just trying to see if i can make a safe use of it

From the photo if you take off the capping from the post, check that's flat and square, you could go straight on top of that without cutting..
Find the size dowel and a nice sharp flat bit

this what exactly what I am doing with the zip bolt . But instead of having a spigot, I will be using a bolt to hold the two pieces together. Have a look at the video below and see what you think

I would maintain access to the tightening bolt as it is likely to loosen over time with the mechanical stresses on the newel.
