I have a honeywell thermostat which is hard wired to my combi boiler and works fine

As my combi boiler is getting replaced I am told that I need to replace a perfectly working thermostat/ Is that right and if it is can anyone tell me a decent and cheap hardwired thermostat - I do not want wireless as the unit will get lost

You don't tell us the make / model of the existing thermostat, or indeed the make / model of the boiler. It's possible that they may not be compatible, although more likely that they will be. I wonder what reason you have been given for it needing to be replaced?

If the bloke installing it says it needs replacing, as he is the professional I would assume he knows what he is doing.

Unless you ended up with some bodge bloke that is doing it for the £300 you wanted to pay.

From memory of your other posts regarding boilers I presume you are having the main eco compact boiler installed you said you were going to.

It might have something to do with the latest boiler plus regulations

Read up on Boiler Plus regulations. A new combi boiler must have either a load compensating thermostat, weather compensation, flue gas heat recovery (Intergas Xtreme, some ATAG boilers), or smart controls

If you insist on not having one the installer can just write 'advised but not wanted' on the paperwork

Of course that does give the manufacturer a get out of jail free card to void the warranty and the new boiler won't be as efficient as it could be costing more in the long run.....

How does that get around informing the local authority?

Surely the work can't be signed off as it is not to regulation?

Of course it can be signed off. I saw thousands of installs that didn't comply that were signed off when I worked for a manufacturer.

I don't think my post was advocating it. I was just saying you're not going to get arrested if you don't have one

Ok that's cool, just genuinely wondered. Seems a bit pointless having the regulation though

Maybe not; but the owner could be fined up to £5,000 for not complying with building regulations.

Installers can also get into trouble - read the attached pdf.
