Looking for an AC evaporator for Peugeot 307?

Hello all,

My AC is not working, I have had car at 2 different mechanics who ran dye/pressure check and both said the evaporator had a leak. Maybe both were wrong.

However, they both have said they can not find an evaporator from any supplier and both said its a dash out job.
My 3 questions are:

1) Is there another easier way to remove and replace the evaporator without a dash out?
2) Anyone help me locate the part from any company?
3) One company I called said theres no such thing as an evaporator for a Peugeot 307, is mechanic not refering to something else? What could it be?

Usually the condensers fail, that's the 'radiator' type thing at the front of the car, because they are out in the weather, salt and they are very delicate. Usually a bumper off job, on a modern car.

The evaporator, as you correctly state, is the inside the cabin 'radiator' type of thing, in your blowers air stream. They rarely fail, but when they do, it's a dash out job to replace them - major work.

If your car has a/c then it must have both items - no exceptions.

The mechanics said the condensor which is at front of car is fine, the evaporator which is much closer to the dash, which he pointed at said had a leak. But is the evaporator not also called a Heater matrix?

The heater matrix only contains coolant from the cooling system.

No, they are a similar part, but carry the coolant, to provide heat to the cabin.

I did not say that, I only said that if your car has a/c - it must have a condenser and an evaporator. The heating system is entirely separate from an a/c system.

2 Mechanics said that there is a leak in the evaporator which is why the AC is not working. The heating is fine but not the coolant. They said the condenser is totally fine.

I called up a parts place and they said he can not find a evaporator for this car, only a heater matrix. Maybe mechanic is calling the heater matrix a evaporator the company said? I am confused?

Now you are saying there is a problem with the coolant. Coolant cools the engine and heats the cabin. Refrigerant is what they use in the a/c system to cool the cabin and is what escapes when you have an a/c leak. Once the leak is fixed, it will need recharging with the refrigerant.

Sorry its the AC, it blows warm air. The heating works fine. 2 mechanics tested it and said theres a leak in evaporator which is why it does not work. Parts place said are you sure its not the Heater matrix he is refering to as there is no evaporator for the peugeot 307.

Then they are wrong, but as already said - much more likely failure is the condenser at the front of the car. If it really is the evaporator, then most people would just do without a/c, rather than pay the labour bill for its replacement.

Agrre with Harry - as I have had that.

AC did not work.
Kept leaking its Refrigerant when re-filled.
Refrigerant UV leak test showed Refrigerant leak was not in engine bay (ie the condenser and pipes).
So had to assume it was in dashboard (ie the evaporator).
Looked at cost of removing dash to replace evaporator and decided to live without AC.
Then only used heat setting (which works by heating the outside air using the hot engine coolant water passing through the Heater Matrix) or cold setting (which works using the outside air and so is whatever the temperature of air outside is).

(noting that not having AC is a pain in Winter as 'AC + Heater' clears screen faster).
